What business man or women doesn't arrive in their hotel room and quickly survey the desk and associated equipment like extra electrical outlets, adequate lighting, a comfy chair along with other accoutrements providing a proper workspace? Alas, the desk may become a dinosaur if Marriott has anything to do with it.
Reportedly, the company is gradually removing workspaces (AKA desks) from most of its rooms in a chain-wide redesign after assessing that millennials want nothing to do with desks! This is an about-face from a move Marriott made just five years ago to emphasize desks and "ergonomic" chairs, only to reverse and replace the square footage with a yoga pad. I am not sure what consultants Marriott is using, but I find it nonsensical to assume that businessmen, no matter what age, will not want a proper work space in their hotel room.
We are all well aware that the office of the future is approaching as the conventional office is turned upside down by technology, and yes, millennials. But that doesn't mean the hotel desk must go. Making matters worse, Marriott is buying Starwood and all of its brands, so if you will want to work in the evening on that business trip, lots-o-luck.
