MESA, AZ—Sundt Construction/Stacy and Witbeck, a joint venture of Sundt Construction Inc. and Stacy and Witbeck, have been selected to extend light rail service along Main Street from Mesa Drive to Gilbert Road. The $75 million construction manager at risk project includes 1.9 miles of concrete-embedded light rail track, underground utility relocations, two new stations and roundabouts, traction power and electrification, signals and communications, and a park-and-ride lot at Gilbert Road and Main Street.
Preconstruction activities began this month, with construction commencing in August 2016. A September 2018 completion is planned.
Cade Rowley, Sundt's business development manager for civil construction, tells GlobeSt.com: "Our past experience working on highly complex sections of the Valley's light rail system, along with our innovative approaches to construction phasing and traffic management, will help us minimize disruption to the local community while keeping the project on schedule and under budget. Once completed, this 2-mile stretch of light rail will not only attract new businesses to the area but also help to sustain the economy that's already established along the corridor by linking East Valley neighborhoods to the area."
From 2004 through 2008, the joint venture team built more than half of Valley Metro's original 20-mile starter section of the light rail line from Phoenix to Mesa. The joint venture also built the system's maintenance and operations facility in Phoenix, and currently is constructing a 3.2-mile line extension project along 19th Avenue from Montebello to Dunlap avenues in northwest Phoenix.
Sundt Construction Inc. is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year and has garnered national attention. The firm is ranked the 75th largest construction company in the United States by ENR, the industry's principal trade magazine.
