AUSTIN--Sen. Kirk Watson and Austin mayor Steve Adler, along representatives from developer Aspen Heights, CIM Group and Constructive Ventures, and an estimated crowd of 250, helped break ground for The Independent on Monday.
The 58-story building, slated to become the tallest in the city at 685 feet, and the tallest multifamily building west of the Mississippi, will feature 370 residential condo units ranging in price from the mid-$400,000s to $3.4 million.
In early December, The Independent's development team announced it had closed on the purchase of 1.7 acres of land located at the northeast corner of West Third Street and West Avenue in downtown Austin from the City of Austin, enabling site work to begin.
During the ceremony, Constructive Ventures' Perry Lorenz presented a t-shirt to Ted Siff, president of the Shoal Creek Conservancy, as well as a check from the development team for $250,000 to assist with improvements along the creek from 2nd to 4th streets.
Demolition of the existing structure on the site is currently ongoing.
After the ground-breaking, attendees, in "quintessential" Austin fashion, enjoyed lunch from food trucks onsite.
