DALLAS--McCarthy Building Cos. Inc. in a joint venture with Black & Veatch, was recently awarded a contract by the Trinity River Authority of Texas (TRA) for the solids-process improvements at the Central Regional Wastewater System in Dallas.
The $152-million project, which focuses on overall comprehensive biosolids improvements, will "utilize a thermal hydrolysis/anaerobic digestion process to break down biosolids for significant reduction in biosolids quantity leaving the plant with the added potential for beneficial reuse in the future," reps for McCarthy say.
"Collaborating with the TRA team on the construction of this thermal hydrolysis treatment process upgrade is an exciting opportunity for our McCarthy/Black & Veach joint-venture project team," Tracy Kimnach, project director at McCarthy, told GlobeSt.com. "While it's going to be the second only of its kind in the United States, the proven technology will provide a better solution for effectively managing solid waste while requiring less plant space and lower construction costs than traditional plants."
CDM Smith, the engineer for the project, designed a comparable thermal hydrolysis installation in Washington, D.C. This is TRA's first alternative delivery project.
The anticipated three-year project construction schedule began last month, with completion slated for December 2018.
"Ultimately, the class A byproduct of thermal hydrolysis is much safer than its alternative," Kimnach says. "TRA is taking a forward-thinking approach to waste management, and McCarthy is pleased to be part of it."
