FT. LAUDERDALE, FL—A new Walmart Supercenter in Ft. Lauderdale opened this week, the first Walmart in the city. The new store employs over 300 full- and part-time associates, and will be open around the clock, seven days a week.
"We are proud to be a part of the Ft. Lauderdale community," said store manager Anthony Boykins. "We look forward to opening and providing area residents with Walmart's everyday low prices in this new year and beyond."
The Ft. Lauderdale Supercenter is a full grocery store with fresh produce, meat, pantry staples and more. Local officials attended a ceremony on Wednesday, noting that the store located at 2500 W. Broward Blvd. will benefit the local community.
"For too long areas of our community have been overlooked, the grand opening of Walmart is the result of a concerted effort that we championed to promote the economic health in the community," said Rep. Bobby DuBose. "Job creation and sustainable economic growth are both vital to bringing communities that were on life support to create a pulse and revive them, this is a step in the right direction."
The store is approximately 185,000 square feet and stocked with quality electronics, furniture, automotive, sporting goods, home improvement, apparel, and toys.
The grand-opening celebration included presentations of $8,000 in grants from Walmart and the Walmart Foundation to local community groups. The new store will also continue a commitment by Walmart and the Walmart Foundation to fight hunger in Ft. Lauderdale and across the US. Walmart and the Walmart Foundation recently exceeded a $2 billion goal to fight hunger one year ahead of schedule and have donated more than 1.5 billion pounds of food to those in need across the country.
