The recent outbreak of the Zika virus spreading across South America and into the US has created serious concerns about exposure, especially among women who may be pregnant. Not only is this very bad news for the upcoming Olympics in Rio, but it also creates serious concern for employers who have employees traveling to or working in the affected regions. Delta Airlines has allowed crews to opt out of travel to the area, and multinational companies such as Kimberly-Clarke are scrambling to advise employees on how to address the risk. This episode highlights the fact that employers have significant responsibility to protect employees from health risks, but few have clear policies in place, and this even extends to the more common serious flu outbreaks that can cripple an organization and pose significant risks to employees. It seems to me that it is only a matter of time before we experience an epidemic of serious proportions here, so it behooves employers to put rational plans in place, and not just wave at it with a fly swatter.
