Downtown Atlanta

ATLANTA—The Shopping Center Group just added a new property manager to its retail team. Dustin R. Jenkins brings a decade of commercial real estate experience to the firm's Atlanta office. He is responsible for managing and maintaining several shopping centers within the Atlanta metropolitan area.

GlobeSt.com caught up with Jenkins, an Atlanta native, to get his take on trends in the market. He also shares what he sees as the biggest challenges in the property management field in this exclusive interview.

GlobeSt.com: What property management trends are you seeing in Atlanta?

Jenkins: Now more than ever, property managers need to be more mobile with the ability to capitalize on available technology. Today's managers must have boots on the ground yet maintain correspondence, reporting and other responsibilities in an efficient and comfortable manner while onsite.

Likewise, gone are the days of property managers awaiting the property “mayday” call before jumping to action. Property owners now expect managers to be nimble and knowledgeable about every square foot of the shopping center and proactively act before trouble hits. The harnessing of technology enables us to do just that.

GlobeSt.com: What are the biggest challenges in property management today?

Jenkins: Green. Sustainable practices hit our industry at the turn of the century but its relevance continues today.

The challenge for property managers is to identify ways to efficiently enhance the environmental impact of our facilities and tenants while keeping budget in check. While large-scale project have great impact, it's our job to make everyday adjustments that also have a meaningful impact over the long-term. For instance, we educate tenants on responsible practices and environmentally-conscious vendor options.
