WASHINGTON, DC—Several District government agencies, including the District’s Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development, participated in a pre-solicitation event last week. Mayor Muriel Bowser held the event during which some 17 community development projects were announced. This is second time the mayor has unveiled District projects to investors and developers in such a manner – she calls the event March Madness. Last year some six projects were offered. The Deputy Mayor for Education, the Department of Housing and Community Development, the Department of General Services, the Department of Parks and Recreation and the DC Public Library also participated in the event. Examples of some of the projects this year are: $100M in Construction Bids for Martin Luther King, Jr. Central Library Now that the design for the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library at 901 G St., NW, is underway, the District is offering bid opportunities for a number of construction activities that total more than $100 million. They range from electrical demolition to general demolition and hazmat abatement and removal to structural steel and miscellaneous metal fabrication to a green roof. Mt. Vernon Triangle Air Rights This project calls for the development of the air rights at the center of Mt. Vernon Triangle — specifically above the parking deck at 2nd and H Streets NW. It is a two-acre site stretching over 87,000 square feet. 1125 Spring Rd., NW This project is the redevelopment of a 3.3-acre site less than half a mile from the from Georgia Avenue/ Petworth Metro station. The property includes the former Hebrew Home for the Aged, a historically designated building, and the former Paul Robeson School for Growth and Redevelopment. Northwest One This is a site at North Capitol & K Street NW, which currently has a surface parking lot and unimproved land. The District would like to see it developed into a 800-unit multifamily housing project , of which approximately 220 would be very low income affordable units. Retail Gateway to Historic Anacostia This project is aimed at revitalizing the retail corridor at the intersection of Good Hope Road and Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue SE, the so-called gateway to historic Anacostia. The scope of the project includes 13,200 square feet of land at Good Hope Road and 5,400 square feet of land at Martine Luther King Jr. Ave. Florida Avenue & Q Street NW This is a 12,402 square foot site consisting of seven vacant lots and one building set to be razed. The District wants it to be an affordable housing project. 809 and 813 Kennedy St., NW Another affordable housing project, this time in the Brightwood submarket. The site consists of two contiguous land parcels . Crummell School The historic Crummell School site is located at 1900 Gallaudet St. NE. It is a 108,000 square foot site located south of the recently renovated Hecht Warehouse and near the Florida Avenue Market
