Broadstone Makers Quarter The mixed-use project will include 265 residential units and 4,949 square feet of retail along Broadway.
SAN DIEGO— Alliance Residential Co. began construction on the first phase of mixed-use project Broadstone Makers Quarter on April 11 with a ceremonial groundbreaking attended by Mayor Kevin Faulconer and other Downtown dignitaries. The development commenced after several years of urban planning and strategy. Broadstone Makers Quarter, located at 16 th and Broadway in the East Village neighborhood of Downtown San Diego, will include 265 residential units and 4,949 square feet of retail along Broadway. Ultimately, Makers Quarter, a major development in this part of Downtown, will include 1 million square feet of office space, approximately 800 units of residential and 175,000 square feet of retail shops and restaurants along 60,000 square feet of open public space, parks and public art. According to San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer , “We have always been known for our beautiful weather and pristine beaches and bays, but every day more and more people around the world are learning that San Diego is a hotbed of opportunities and innovation. Innovation districts like Makers Quarter will keep that momentum going so that San Diego can continue to be a leader and global incubator for ideas, ingenuity and innovation. Broadstone Makers Quarter marks the first milestone of the neighborhood.” As urban planner Stacey Pennington told GlobeSt.com exclusively in December , “First will come the construction on Broadstone Makers Quarter and then the construction on the first office buildings. Right after that, construction will begin on StreetLights Makers Quarter. It’s a big project—it’s not the kind where we’re ready to butcher it all up; it needs to integrate with the neighborhood. I feel like we were advancing pretty quickly, but others in the community feel we’re five years into it with three blocks under construction. All five blocks of this 2.5-million-square-foot project could happen as soon as 2021-2022. It’s an economic-development approach.” For a newly released video on Makers Quarter, click here .
