Over the last few decades New Yorkers trekked to the west side of Manhattan to visit “Auto Row,” where auto dealerships such as Jaguar, BMW, Jeep, Honda and most other brands occupy large showrooms and even larger garages to house inventory. Alas, you may need to journey across the Hudson River to shop for those new wheels because west side Auto Row real estate is being gobbled up by the likes of billionaire Will Ackman, who just plunked down $225 million for one such property and are going to develop an upscale and a bit funky office project, and his hedge fund Pershing Square Capital Management reportedly will occupy the penthouse. What is interesting about this conversion is that showrooms enjoy one acre landscapes and few columns that allow creative and “today” office and mixed-use designs. I found this trend interesting because it dramatically highlights how urban regeneration is reviving and revitalizing every square inch of the urban landscape. When all of these dealerships go out of service where will we get the maintenance check-up and lube job? |
