SAN ANTONIO, TX—Different employment sectors flourish in locations with economies of scale, a talented workforce and focused support of local policymakers. In this regard, San Antonio has leveraged its longstanding military city credentials to quickly become a national leader in cyber security.

Roland Mower, president and CEO, Port San Antonio, tells GlobeSt.com: “Cyber technology is quickly emerging as one of our leading industries in San Antonio. Throughout our city there are vibrant hubs of innovation and development. At the Port, which is home to thousands of department of defense employees, we are fulfilling a role that is focused on highly specialized and advanced cyber security. Within the past year we've seen an array of contractors specializing in cyber security—both military and commercial—arrive on our large campus. We look forward to continue working closely with those customers by providing them additional state-of-the art, secure facilities that give them the flexibility to expand and quickly scale their operations in this fast-paced, dynamic industry.”

Thanks to existing secure facilities throughout the area's bases, the city was first in line to accommodate large numbers of new cyber-warriors as recently as five years ago. As such, in 2013, the Air Force inaugurated its cyber command office at Port San Antonio.

With this type of momentum, the Port is poised to grow Alamo City's contribution to cyber security even further. The objective in the months ahead is to offer additional facilities in close proximity to the Air Force's office and other key players in the region's cyber community. This strategy is expected to create 5,000 new jobs for the region by 2020.

Currently, the Port is moving forward with planning a new facility ideally suited to accommodate growing demand by both military and private-sector cyber security operations. The first phase of the project entails building a new office located just down the street from the cyber command facility. The proposed building will complement the Roberson Building—a three-story office located at the main entrance.
