SAN DIEGO—International design firm Ware Malcomb has completed the first phase of construction on Cubic Corporation’s new office design. Cubic is located at 9323 Balboa Avenue . Under the contract award for this first phase, Ware Malcomb provided Cubic with interior architecture and design, branding, and strategic workplace planning services. This project is the first in a series of undertakings to renovate the Cubic campus, and serves as a prototype for future projects.

Ware Malcomb successfully transformed the 13,000 square foot office space and created a new modular interior workplace standard for Cubic to accommodate the continuously changing needs of the company’s engineering teams. The flexible standards development included suite and departmental entries, branding and way finding, meeting, amenity and ancillary spaces, work stations and private offices. Many of these spaces were designed and sized based on a modular footprint, allowing the areas to expand and contract based on need. The transition from a traditional, closed office environment to a more open, progressive design was enhanced by new graphics and technology solutions to improve global employee communication and collaboration. Within the space, Ware Malcomb designed impactful, supersize graphics that pay homage to the defense industry, which is one of Cubic’s core businesses. The new office space expands and contracts to accommodate Cubic’s teaming requirements. Demountable glass walls provide a visual connection to natural light and foster accessibility among team members. Furniture selection, which is also key to creating a flexible work environment, is based on a kit of parts that support varying end user needs. The new prototype modular design, cutting edge graphics and technology successfully accommodate Cubic’s operational requirements and is intended to reflect the company’s longstanding reputation as “Global, Innovative, Trusted.” “Our first step in this project was to meet with Cubic leaders and employees to define the concepts and strategies most important to them in the design of their new work environment,” said Tiffany English , principal of Ware Malcomb. “The key concepts identified were access to natural light, a bright and colorful interior, and enhanced communication between the diverse, multigenerational staff. It was important to provide a more collaborative culture, integrated with quiet heads-down space. The final design supports these objectives, and is also flexible enough to adapt to Cubic’s changing needs.” Founded in Point Loma in 1951, Cubic provides diversified systems and services to the transportation and defense markets worldwide. This project is part of the ongoing modernization of Cubic facilities, for which Ware Malcomb is also providing master planning and architectural design services. “The objective is to maintain a balance between a modest work environment respecting cost and shareholder value, while creating a modern, efficient workplace,” added English. The general contractor for the project was Good & Roberts . Established in 1972, Ware Malcomb is an international design firm providing planning, architecture, interior design, branding and civil engineering services to commercial real estate and corporate clients. With 18 office locations throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and Panama, the firm specializes in the design of commercial office, corporate, industrial, science & technology, healthcare, retail, auto, public/educational facilities and renovation projects.
