Office rehab Method Architecture preserved the building’s original marble and wood flooring.
HOUSTON—Constructed more than a century ago in 1909, the Scanlan Building reaches 11 stories, prominently situated on the intersection of Main and Preston Streets in downtown. It was purchased in late 2013 by Chicago-based Level Office . Method Architecture recently completed an interior renovation within the iconic building for Level Office. The suites within the Scanlan Building are Level Office’s third Houston location. Burton Construction was the general contractor on the project. Balancing the use of modern elements against historic features, Method Architecture preserved the building’s original marble and wood flooring, paired with exposed ceilings, wrought iron columns and Edison bulb lighting.  Ashley Bettcher , team lead with Method Architecture, tells GlobeSt.com: “This project posed a large challenge dealing with over 100 years of build-outs and not knowing what we would possibly uncover.  We embraced the aged building materials found and incorporated them into the overall design esthetic.” The three-story renovation project included full-scale plans to transform the outdated space into revitalized office suites and common areas, establishing a modern co-working facility. This unique co-working space is geared toward freelancers, entrepreneurs and small businesses. The rent-effective suites offer a workspace, including amenities such as an entry receptionist, card reader security and full access to shared spaces. These spaces also include a common lounge, chef’s kitchen and conference facilities. “Level Office was an innovative design where the client allowed us to think outside the box, to combine an industrial and modern design aesthetic that transformed the 1909 building,” says Bettcher.
