Gender equality panel at an event hosted by CREW-Miami and the Florida Bar Gender equality panel at an event hosted by CREW-Miami and the Florida Bar
When Barbara Black first tried to enter the real estate industry, she was offered a secretarial position. Black obtained her real estate license when there were no women working in commercial real estate in the District of Columbia, where she hoped to launch a career focused on tenant representation. She knew landing a real estate job would be difficult after her first interview when the male hiring manager turned her down because of her gender. “He said, ‘Barbara, if you were a man, I would hire you today. But since you’re a female, I’m not going to hire you,’” said Black, now a managing director at JLL . That was four decades ago, and while strides have been made across all industries in the fight against gender inequality, there is still progress to be made. According to an article , written by GlobeSt.com sister publication, ALM’s Daily Business Review, nearly 200 South Florida real estate and legal professionals gathered Wednesday to discuss gender inequality in an event hosted by CREW-Miami and the Florida Bar. “The legal profession has had its share of societal issues when it comes to gender bias,” Florida Bar President Bill Schifino acknowledged during a panel discussion. In 1990, less than 10% of all Florida judges were women, said the Tampa-based managing partner with Burr & Forman. Today, women make up just over a third of judges and 38 percent of the Florida Bar. Of the 52 members sitting on the bar’s board of governors, 14 are women. “Is that enough?” Schifino asked. “No, it’s not enough. There’s a lot of work to do, but we’re getting there.” Click here to read the full story on Daily Business Review and learn what this particular panel says to do about gender pay gaps.
