Anthony LoPinto

If we were to wind back the clock 25 years we would observe that job stability and long-term job continuity were important factors in an employer's evaluation of potential new hires. Fast forward to today and we find that, on average, professionals tend to make job moves more often, and among some hiring managers it is not the stigma that it once was. Time out!

Executive recruiters and their clients are very focused on short term job tenures, and every move is assessed for the reasons he or she made the switch, especially if there are multiple moves with two year stints. Unless there are good, underwriteable reasons for moves, more often than not, those candidates will not be considered.

Of course there are sectors such as technology and e-commerce where roles are populated by millennials and moves are commonplace and acceptable since the velocity of change lays the groundwork for professional movement. In real estate that is not the case, so carefully managing one's job tenures is critical. What's an acceptable tenure? On average five years underwrites well and avoids those raised eyebrows.
