CHICAGO—The city's central business district has just scored another global firm. Officials from Duracell, the world's largest battery manufacturer, say they have established their executive offices at 181 W. Madison St.
The company will keep its headquarters in Bethel, CT, but bring its chief executive officer and more than 60 new positions to Chicago.
“With this move Duracell is making their future part of Chicago's future,” said Mayor Rahm Emanuel in a statement. “Duracell's commitment to Chicago speaks volumes about their confidence in Chicago. As a company that relies on innovative research and development, I am confident Duracell will continue to grow and thrive in a city that is leading the way on 21st-century innovation.”
CBRE Global Investors bought the 936,638-square-foot building in late 2013, and like many downtown landlords, it then began spending millions on enhancements and new amenities that could attract the many corporations then giving the city's Loop serious looks. In 2014, for example, the US Green Building Council awarded the 50-story building a LEED-EB Gold certification.
Although Duracell will only occupy about 11,000 square feet, according to Colliers CBRE recently hung a for-sale sign on the building, and having a global firm's executive offices brings a certain prestige.
“Duracell is in an exciting period in our company's history,” said Angelo Pantaleo, chief executive officer of Duracell. “As we look ahead, we will continue to build on our rich past and strong foundation to transform the world's number-one battery maker into the world's number-one personal power company. We are pleased to lead that effort from the great city of Chicago, where the city's business ecosystem, talent, quality of life and far-reaching global connections are first class.”
In November 2014, Procter & Gamble agreed to sell Duracell to Berkshire Hathaway Inc. The battery maker has 2,700 employees globally with manufacturing operations in: Cleveland, TN; LaGrange, GA.; Lancaster, SC; Aarschot, Belgium; and Dongguan, China; and other regional management offices in Geneva, Switzerland; Singapore; West Palm Beach, FL.; and Bethel, CT.
