Massport is planning major improvements for Terminals B and E at Logan Airport.

BOSTON—The Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Port Authority approved a partial budget appropriation of $45 million for improvements at Terminal B at Logan Airport.

The Terminal B improvements are geared at consolidating all American Airlines gates from two different locations in Terminal B to 18 contiguous gates on the side of the terminal formerly occupied by US Airways. The consolidation was necessitated by the merger of American Airlines and US Airways that was completed last year.

Massport says the three existing security checkpoints on the former US Airways side of Terminal B will be consolidated into one modern checkpoint. American currently serves approximately six million passengers per year at Logan.

“Massport continues to strategically invest in projects that will enhance passenger experience and airline operations,” says Massport CEO Thomas P. Glynn. “The Terminal B project will streamline passenger movement, improve coordination within one of our largest airline partners and support more efficient operations at Logan International Airport.”

The expected total project budget for the Terminal B improvements is currently estimated at $180 million. The partial project budget of $45 million was approved at the Massport board meeting last Thursday.

Additionally, the Terminal B project will include the expansion and reorganization of ticketing counters and kiosks; gate modifications to better accommodate airline requirements; an improved baggage handling area; reconfigured concession locations and organization and passenger experience enhancements.

In total, the project will include the construction of an additional 75,000 square feet of space and the renovation of approximately 70,000 square feet of existing space within Terminal B. The project will pursue green building initiatives and LEED certification, the level of which will be determined as project planning advances, Massport states.

Once the project is completed, it is expected that Southwest Airlines will move from Terminal A into American's vacated gates at Terminal B. Following the approval of the subsequent phases of the project, construction is expected to commence in March of 2017 and be completed by the end of 2018.

Massport official estimate the Terminal B improvement project will create approximately 1,669 full-time direct and related jobs.

Massport is also proposing a major project to modernize international Terminal E at Logan Airport. The project, which according to published reports will cost more than $500 million to complete, would add seven gates (three of which were permitted in the 1990s but not built). There are 12 gates in Terminal E, the same number when the terminal opened in 1974, when one million passengers used the terminal. Today it is used by nearly six million.
