The hospitality sector has had its ups and downs of late, but one segment of the business that has held up and is expanding are boutique brands. The majors like Marriott have entered the fray with brands such as Edition, but the most interesting are new and surprising entrants like furniture retailers West Elm and Restoration Hardware and fitness chain Equinox.

Business and vacation travelers increasingly crave unique experiences, and retailers such as West Elm have tapped an interesting angle: Provide the guest with a special experience while showcasing their furniture offerings. The Wall Street Journal ran a story about this emerging trend, highlighting, yet again, the disruption occurring in the retail sector. As retailers such as Restoration Hardware reach a saturation point in the number of stores, they are turning to new, and somewhat revolutionary tactics to broaden their brand. When you check into their hotel you can download an app that will enable you to buy that sofa or lamp that adorns your room.

I like this angle, and it's fun to think about the boutique offerings that retailers such as Lego will roll out when they enter the fray.
