MIAMI—A New York developer working on a project in Miami turned out to be a nightmare tenant, according to a lawsuit filed against him in federal court. JMH Development founder Jason Halpern, who creates luxury real estate, allegedly rented—then wrecked—a fellow developer's high-end office space, according to the complaint.

In an article written by GlobeSt.com sister publication, ALM's Daily Business Review, it says that Halpern's New York-based company has developed two luxury Miami Beach projects: condos at 300 Collins Ave. and the Starwood Hotel & Resorts-branded Aloft South Beach, which sold last month. He was at work on a third project that appeared to unravel and led to the landlord-tenant litigation.

The suit is by Palm Court at 23rd Street Ltd., linked to Wynwood developer Ronald Bloomberg, CEO of Bloomberg Equities LLC. It alleges breach of contract and breach of guaranty against Halpern and his 2901 JMH LLC. It claims the defendants caused more than $75,000 in property damage after starting, then abandoning, a tenant buildout at the Palm Court office complex at 309 23rd St. in Miami Beach.
