This weekend the Sunday New York Times ran a feature in the Business Section that included a profile interview of Deirdre Quinn, the CEO of NY fashion giant Lafayette 148. Quinn was quoted in the story that her biggest pet peeve are people who are late. To quote Quinn, “When I say a meeting's starting, don't be late, or I will close the door.” The article resonated with me on the heels of a recent search for a public company's next CEO.

Our client was the Chairman of the Board who drove the Search process. Under his leadership, if a conference call was scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Board Directors and our Search team were considered late if we arrived on the call at 9:55 a.m; on time at 9:50 a.m; and gleefully, early at 9:45 a.m. By the end of the successful search, everyone was on the call at 9:45 a.m.

Lesson learned….the early bird catches the worm.
