ALEXANDRIA, VA–Edens broke ground yesterday on a residential and retail building at 530 First St. Construction is expected to begin this spring and the building will deliver in 2019.

Per Edens' usual model, it is partnering with a multifamily developer — in this case Gables Residential. The building will have 50,000 square feet of community-centered space and 232 high-end apartment units.

This will be Gables Residential's first development in Alexandria, according to CEO Sue Ansel.

Meanwhile, across the District in Silver Spring, Md., construction is about to begin on Solaire 8250 Georgia Ave. The Bethesda, MD-based Washington Property Co. plans to break ground shortly on the luxury apartment community, located two blocks from the Silver Spring Metro station. It will be WPC's fourth Solaire-branded apartment community and its second in Silver Spring's Ripley District. When the 20-story Solaire 8250 Georgia Avenue delivers in spring of 2019, WPC's four communities will total over 1,000 units.
