A. Philip Randolph Houses in Harlem

NEW YORK CITY—Real estate development firm Trinity Financial's A. Philip Randolph Houses has received historic preservation awards from the Preservation League of New York State and the New York Landmarks Conservancy.

Trinity Financial, which has offices in New York City and Boston, reports it's A. Philip Randolph Houses project in Harlem received the Excellence in Historic Preservation Award from the Preservation League of New York State yesterday at a ceremony at the New York Yacht Club. The firm is scheduled to receive a Lucy G. Moses Preservation Project Award from the New York Landmarks Conservancy tonight at an awards program to be held at the New York Public Library.

The A. Philip Randolph Houses project was one of four projects in New York City to secure the preservation award from the Preservation League of New York State. The other honorees were: the Beekman Hotel and Residences/Temple Court, the South Street Museum: the 1865 sailing ship Wavertree and the Rogue Tomate Chelsea.

Once slated for demolition, Trinity took on the Randolph Houses project along with partners West Harlem Group Assistance and with the financial assistance from the New York City Housing Authority, New York City Housing Preservation & Development, New York City Housing Development Corporation and Enterprise Community Investment, Inc. Trinity and its partners successfully rehabilitated the 22 (of 36) five-story Old Law tenement buildings that make up the first phase of the development.

The building facades have been restored and now feature repaired brownstone, limestone and brick, as well as new windows and doors. The interiors of the buildings have been completely demolished and rehabilitated into 168 units of affordable and public housing, along with community spaces. Residents at the Randolph Houses will also benefit from the creation of larger units, the installation of elevators, new appliances and a state-of-the art HVAC system, Trinity Financial states.

“Historical preservation and maintaining the architectural integrity of the neighborhoods we work in are always a priority for us,” says Thomas Brown, VP of development at Trinity Financial. “Our work at Randolph Houses marks one of the most significant historic restorations of public housing in New York's history, a transformation which will ensure that future generations can live comfortably in high-quality housing with a sense of community.”

The Lucy G. Moses Awards are the New York Landmarks Conservancy's highest honors for outstanding preservation projects that provide jobs, promote tourism, maintain beloved institutions and protect the character of the city. The award recognizes projects that demonstrate excellence in the restoration, preservation or adaptive reuse of historic buildings. The Preservation League of New York State's annual Excellence Awards celebrate the outstanding leadership of public officials and individuals in the field of preservation and recognize exemplary preservation projects.
