A high percentage of the students graduating today from our college and university system are woefully short on writing skills. Alas, a story hit the front page of the Wall Street Journal this morning reporting that colleges are also failing to teach students how to think!

An annual test of freshmen and seniors at 200 colleges found that at one-half of the schools, over a third of the seniors were unable to make a cohesive argument, assess the quality of evidence in a document, or interpret data in a table. More shocking is that international rankings show US college graduates are in the middle of the pack when it comes to numeracy and literacy, and near the bottom when it comes to problem solving.

We have a crisis across the spectrum of education in the US from grade school and high schools across the country, to a college and university system that is not up to par. With all the rhetoric in Washington, we never hear about an agenda to focus on education, and at the local level, Boards of Education are political animals that are failing the next generation.

I'm not sure how this will get fixed without business demanding change.
