NEW YORK CITY—In a unanimous vote, the Real Estate Board of New York's Board of Governors elected Rudin Management Company CEO William C. Rudin on Thursday the next chairman of the real estate trade organization. Rudin, who is also vice-chairman of Rudin Management, will succeed Tishman Speyer CEO and president Rob Speyer as REBNY chairman on Jan. 1, 2018 to begin his three-year term.
Rudin and his cousin Eric Rudin, vice chairman of Rudin Management Co., oversee the Rudin Family New York City real estate portfolio of 16 office towers—totaling more than 10 million square feet of Class A space—and 20 luxury apartment buildings,
“This is a tremendous honor and responsibility, and I look forward to working with REBNY to represent the real estate industry in New York City,” Rudin says. “Service to our city and industry is paramount to me and my family, and taking on this role next year is a natural extension of that dedication. Rob Speyer has set the bar high for the REBNY chairmanship, and I am grateful to the Nominating Committee and the Board of Governors for their trust and confidence in me.”
Speyer says of his successor, “Bill Rudin is the very definition of a civic leader. His commitment to making New York a better place is an inspiration. REBNY will be in good hands under his smart and thoughtful leadership.”
Rudin has been a member of REBNY for 30 years, has served as a member of REBNY's Executive Committee since 1991 and as a member of the Board of Governors since 1987. He has received REBNY's highest honors—The Harry B. Helmsley Distinguished New Yorker Award in 2007 and The Bernard H. Mendik Lifetime Leadership in Real Estate Award in 2015.
The New York Building Congress released a statement praising Rudin's election as chairman. “Bill Rudin continues to carry on an amazing family tradition of devoted service to New York City and the real estate community. His dedication to improving the city's economy and quality of life of all residents make him an ideal choice to build upon the successes of Rob Speyer as REBNY Chairman,” states Carlo A. Scissura, president and CEO of the New York Building Congress. “The New York Building Congress looks forward to working side by side with Bill and REBNY to advance a host of vital economic development, housing and infrastructure initiatives throughout the five boroughs.”
Speyer, who will serve as REBNY Chairman for the balance of 2017, led REBNY's negotiations with the Building and Construction Trades Council of Greater New York, as well as talks with state's legislative leaders and Gov. Andrew Cuomo that resulted in the recently enacted Affordable New York Housing Program. During his three-year term, he presided over REBNY's growth to its current record level of more than 17,000 members.
