IRVINE, CA—Residents want to feel connected to their community, so apartment communities in premier locations close to shopping, dining, employment and transportation are paramount to their satisfaction levels, Yunmi Martin, SVP of Shea Apartments at Shea Properties, tells GlobeSt.com. The developer's apartment portfolio received two national awards for resident satisfaction: the 2016 “Top Rated” Award from ApartmentRatings.com (which it received for the fifth consecutive year) and 2016 National Resident Satisfaction Award from SatisFacts. We spoke with Yunmi about what apartment renters find relevant to their satisfaction.

GlobeSt.com: What do apartment renters find important and relevant to their satisfaction today?

Martin: In the last five years, we've seen a shift in what apartment renters find most important when it comes to selecting where they want to live. Today's residents are looking for a community that enhances their lifestyle by providing industry-leading onsite amenities, first-class customer service and competitive pricing. Residents want to feel connected to their community, and for that reason, we've built our apartment communities in premier locations close to shopping, dining, employment and transportation to make their daily activities even more convenient.

GlobeSt.com: What trends do you see in the types of things renters are looking for in apartment living?

Martin: Residents are utilizing amenities more than ever before. We've designed our apartment communities to extend our residents' living spaces beyond the individual-leased units by providing hotel-style amenities and communal gathering spaces that create a true sense of community and convenience. For example, one of our newest apartment communities, Vantis, features a mega cabana with large-screen TVs, soft seating and a common-area kitchen that opens onto the resort-style pool and spa. Throughout the community, you can find beautifully designed courtyards with BBQs, picnic areas and fire pits. There's also a high-end fitness and conditioning club with cardio and weigh- training equipment, as well as a flex yoga studio and outdoor fitness park. Many of our newest properties also cater to our four-legged friends and those who love them with pet spas and bark parks.

GlobeSt.com: Conversely, what do renters find off-putting about apartment living?

Martin: Customer service is something that must be a priority when it comes to apartment living. Our main goal is to create a successful, enjoyable rental-living experience for all of our residents, and to do that, it's important to have a strong, on-site management team. A resident's first impression will start with our property team, and we pride ourselves on making their experience at a Shea apartment community the best it can be. We value our residents' feedback and are honored to have recently received two national awards for resident satisfaction.

GlobeSt.com: What else should our readers know about today's apartment communities?

Martin: More and more individuals are choosing to rent in today's economic landscape. Even individuals who have the financial means to own a home are choosing not to buy because of the simplicity of renting and the access to on-site services, including maintenance, concierge-like help and luxury amenities.
