MINNEAPOLIS—This city's Uptown neighborhood has long been one its most popular residential areas for professionals, and its about to get another collection of new apartment homes. Sons of Norway has just signed an agreement with Ryan Cos. US, Inc. and Weidner Apartment Homes for the sale and redevelopment of the land parcel where the fraternal organization has had its international headquarters since 1962. Located on Lake St. between Holmes and Humboldt avenues, the property sits in the heart of the Uptown.

The developers have not released many details about the plans for the marquee location. But Sons of Norway officials do say the organization will continue business operations on the site.

“After an extensive process to ensure the highest and best use of our primary asset, the clear choice was to sell the property that has served us so well,” says Eivind J. Heiberg, chief executive officer. “Considering market conditions in the Uptown neighborhood and the challenges of an aging facility, it was time to make the most forward-thinking decision for the long-term health of our organization, employees and the community.”

The neighborhood borders on Lake Calhoun, which has attracted many renters that want an outdoors lifestyle and quick access to the city's vibrant CBD, located about one mile to the north.

Minneapolis-based Ryan Cos. will develop, design and construct the project. It has already helped re-envision a number of iconic Twin Cities' properties, including Midtown Global Exchange, Grainbelt Brewery, and Downtown East among many others.

“We have been in dialogue with Sons of Norway for quite some time and we feel that the location provides an incredible opportunity,” says Tony Barranco, Ryan's vice president of real estate development.

And this is not Kirkland, WA-based Weidner's first foray in the Twin Cities. In 2015, the company bought 222 Hennepin Apartments, a 286-unit luxury development in Minneapolis, for $109 million, a record-setting price for the city.
