CORPUS CHRISTI, TX—McCarthy Building Companies broke ground on the new tower for Christus Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi–Shoreline in July 2016 and the addition is expected to be completed in spring 2019. The topping out was recently commemorated with an aluminum beam for all Christus employees to sign, which will be displayed in the hospital upon completion.
“The successful collaboration between McCarthy and Christus Spohn has provided ultimate safety for both workers and hospital visitors during a very complex project, and we are proud of that,” said Jim Stevenson, McCarthy Houston division president.
The new 12-story tower will significantly add to the hospital's capability in providing care for its patients. McCarthy is building a new imaging room and operating rooms on the second floor, a new emergency department to replace the emergency room and renovating about eight- to- 10 blocks of utilities on the hospital's campus.
GlobeSt.com learns the renovation scope includes approximately 100,000 square feet of overhaul to the existing campus buildings that provide clinical and patient care spaces such as outpatient rehabilitation, wound care, cardiac operating rooms and interventional radiology. This renovation is in addition to the 500,000 square feet of aging building demolition. The underground utility installation includes campus-wide utilities from the new central plant. The new utilities extend from the central plant to the new tower addition as well as the existing buildings scheduled to remain.
Some of McCarthy's other healthcare projects include Christus Trinity Mother Frances Hospital-Tyler expansion, the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center Alkek hospital expansion in Houston, the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center-The Pavilion expansion in Houston, the Children's Health Specialty Center 2 Plano and the Carl R. Darnall Army medical center replacement at Fort Hood, TX by Balfour Beatty in a joint venture with McCarthy.
