Rendering of partner offices, WithumSmith+Brown, 1 Tower Center Blvd., East Brunswick, NJ

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ—The CPA firm of WithumSmith+Brown relocated more than 150 employees to 1 Tower Center Boulevard, East Brunswick, NJ in a comprehensive, sustainable buildout of its new 46,234-square-foot first-class office space that used recycled content and diverted 34,873 pounds of construction waste from landfills.

“We are extremely proud of the choices we have made in designing the office space, which is most certainly not like any other 'typical accounting office,'” says John Mortenson, partner-in-charge of the East Brunswick office. “We looked to create a homelike, modern environment for our professionals to highlight the family culture of the firm while creating a warm, professional and welcoming environment for our clients.”

Withum collaborated with Aztec Total Architecture of Iselin; Interior Construction Partnership of Morristown, a division of Office Furniture Partnership; and DIRTT Environmental Solutions, on the project.

Tasked with creating an interior that merged Withum's innovative present-day mindset with the achievements of past employee generations, the team created a modern design. Goals included paying tribute to enduring company values and traditions focusing on The Withum Way—tenets that embody the culture of Withum, emphasizing passion, innovation, community and strength.

Redesign details include:

  • An employee lounge and staff cafeteria that combines high-design with high-function elements such as modern furnishings, integrated television technology and advanced power systems.
  • Employee workspaces featuring modular workstations; informal, open-concept gathering areas; and contemporary floor-to-ceiling glass elements to create an atmosphere of transparency.

DIRTT is facilitating a construction-industry shift toward efficiency by placing as much value on the environment and the people as that which is placed on visual and functional design. DIRTT utilizes prefab interiors with cost certainty, minimal waste, faster lead times and a precise fit and finish.

Carpet scrap and drywall waste were diverted from landfills, and the build-out of 2,480 linear feet was completed in 35 days, with power and data pre‐manufactured and inspection ready.
