New York City—Rudin Management Company has appointed Nicholas Martin to the newly created position of VP, external and government affairs. Martin comes from the Office of Senate Democratic Leader Charles E. Schumer, where he worked as the director of policy and economic development.
Co-chair Bill Rudin noted Martin's invaluable experience in working for US Sen. Schumer, while Martin expressed hopes of working in a position involving both business and civic responsibilities.
The Rudin family's extensive New York City portfolio includes 16 office buildings and 18 apartment buildings. With Boston Properties and WeWork, the Rudin family is developing Dock 72, a 675,000 square-foot commercial building at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. With Global Holdings, Inc., they are completing construction of Greenwich Lane, a 199-unit, large-scale, luxury condominium in the West Village.
Sen. Schumer recognized Martin's years in public service.
“From advocating to build the vital Gateway Tunnel to overseeing the billions we secured to rebuild after Superstorm Sandy for the past six years, Nicholas Martin has ably helped me serve the people of New York,” said Schumer, praising Martin's work ethic and ability to forge consensus with disparate interests.
However, in a turn of events, heightening concerns in the political, transportation and real estate worlds, the Gateway Project has encountered a recent setback. As reported in Crain's, last Friday, President Donald Trump has potentially ended the project by denying a commitment of federal funding.
Yet, as director of policy and economic development for Sen. Schumer, for four years Martin oversaw federal policy issues affecting New York City including transportation, tax, housing and finance. In addition to the Gateway Program and Superstorm Sandy rebuilding, Martin worked on economic development projects including the Moynihan Station and led strategic planning, political outreach, regulatory approval and press strategy.
For approximately a year and a half, Martin was the director of intergovernmental affairs in Sen. Schumer's office. He worked as the deputy chief of staff for the New York City Mayor's Office of Contract Services, under Michael Bloomberg, and served as the deputy Brooklyn director in the Bloomberg for Mayor 2009 campaign.
Martin is pursuing a master's degree at NYU Schack Institute of Real Estate and graduated from Villanova University in 2008.
