GRAND CAYMAN, CAYMAN ISLANDS—Three years ago, GlobeSt.com visited the Cayman Islands to chat with Dart Real Estate, a subsidiary of Dart Enterprises about its property Camana Bay, the idea of “new urbanism” and the next chapter for the company.
At the time, Jackie Doak, now president of the company (COO at the time of the interview), talked about the idea of urbanism and how Camana Bay's design is driven by purpose—a mixed-use community with commercial, retail, educational, recreational and resort facilities, open green spaces and residential properties all within walking distance.
We came back just a little over three years later and the progress has been incredible.
In November, 2014, Doak spoke a lot about the company's recent project at the time, called 18 Forum Lane. The office building was in its finishing stages and on track to be Grand Cayman's first LEED Gold certified office building. It has come a long way.
This fall, 18 Forum Lane took home the 2017 Governor's Awards for Design and Construction Excellence. The Governor's Award website said the commercial and hospitality winner, 18 Forum Lane, won in part for being “outstanding in its sustainable design but retains a familiar language with its louvres, roofing, breezeways and courtyards that articulates the New Urbanism in the Cayman Islands.”
The office building actually went head to head with Kimpton Seafire Resort + Spa (pictured here) as the finalists in the running for the award. Kimpton Seafire Resort + Spa opened last year, and along with the 62 adjacent Residences at Seafire, is the first resort and residential property from Dart Real Estate in partnership with Dart Development.
Dart Real Estate has already developed more than $1.3 billion in mixed-use, residential, commercial, recreational, educational and hospitality properties throughout the Cayman Islands. And most recently on the agenda were some major infrastructure changes.
In December, the Camana Bay South Roundabout and the northbound lanes of the new Esterley Tibbetts Highway opened. The road and roundabout opening signified the completion of another phase of the road network improvements included in the NRA Agreement between the Cayman Islands Government and Dart Real Estate.
So what's next? So much more, but currently, the company is in the process of completing its fifth commercial building at Camana Bay, One Nexus Way which is also on track for LEED Gold certification.
Check back in the next week for so much more from Doak and other Dart executives as we discuss the next chapter for Dart Real Estate, what sets Camana Bay apart from other mixed-use projects, why Grand Cayman is a good place to invest and more on risk management and rigorous building standards.
