NEW YORK CITY—A state court judge ordered Daniel Melamed to serve jail beginning last Thursday, 20 days ahead of his Feb. 14 sentencing.
As reported in GlobeSt.com, Melamed pleaded guilty in November 2017 to a 13-count indictment, for defrauding HUD and financial institutions. State Supreme Court Judge Danny Chun had ordered Melamed to serve time behind bars pending sentencing on this case and a June 2017 conviction of three counts of unlawful eviction.
In November, Melamed confessed to creating shell corporations and forging documents to illegally purchase and sell multiple Brooklyn properties from 2011 through 2014. He pleaded guilty to grand larceny, forgery, criminal possession of a forged instrument and attempted grand larceny.
In June, Melamed was convicted of unlawful eviction charges. The New York attorney general's office presented evidence that immediately after buying the building Melamed worked to drive out rent stabilized tenants by cutting essential services such as heat, performing illegal construction and failing to contain and clean toxic lead dust. This case was the first arrest which resulted from an investigation of the Tenant Harassment Prevention Force, an effort of state and city agencies created in Feb. 2015.
“Daniel Melamed swindled taxpayers and harassed tenants in order to line his own pockets. Now he's in jail,” said Attorney General Eric Schneiderman. “My office will use every tool we have to bring bad landlords to justice.”
