DALLAS—The historic Dallas High School building located at 2218 Bryan St. was renovated for commercial use after sitting vacant for 22 years. The building is a three-and-one-half story classical revival structure built in 1907.
After relocating its office to the historic building last month, Perkins+Will held its grand opening there yesterday. The firm occupies more than 39,500 square feet of the building, the entire third floor and part of the second floor. Perkins+Will's new design studio is among the first offices in north Texas to pursue three third-party health and wellness certifications: LEED Platinum, WELL and Fitwel.
Matthews Southwest refurbished the building into approximately 105,000 square feet of office and retail space. Merriman Anderson/Architects is the core/shell and historic preservation architect.
The project became a city-designated historic landmark in 2000. Preservation Texas added Dallas High School to its inaugural list of “Texas' Most Endangered Historic Places” in 2004, and it is also included in The National Register of Historic Places.
“Our office integrates the firm's brand, the culture of the local practice and people, the Dallas community, and the history of the building into a destination that is sure to engage all who visit or work here,” Tom Reisenbichler, managing director of the Dallas practice of Perkins+Will, tells Globe.St.com. “The reuse of the interior spaces in the 111-year-old landmark is a highly sustainable design approach, which supports Perkins+Will's focus on sustainability/reuse, environmental performance, and employee health and well-being.”
Perkins+Will utilizes the expertise of more than 180 architects, interior designers and planners as it celebrates its 30th anniversary.
