Over past couple of days, political leaders in the US and Europe called for aggressive inquiries into whether Facebook failed to stop improper access and handling of user data.
Facebook and other online giants such as Google have amassed unprecedented amounts of personal data, and there is evidence that the company enabled the improper use of this data.
That's scary, but even scarier is the legal use of social media data on Facebook and other online mediums by employers who increasingly scour your social media accounts and activity. A recent survey indicated that 70% of employers now use social media to screen job candidates before hiring them, up from 60% a year ago and 11% in 2006.
The reality is that your online posts can trip-up real-life job opportunities, so it is critical that professional cultivate a positive online persona. The amount of data that is out there about each and every one of us is astounding.
In this age of technology and social media, we're all open books, so beware and think twice about what you post.
