ROCHESTER, MN—The Mayo Clinic reports it will add 11 floors to its Gonda Building on its Rochester campus here in order to expand patient care and meet the need for further clinical space.
The Mayo Clinic is partnering with Singapore-based Pontiac Land on the $190-million project that will also include hotel space. Preliminary plans call for construction to begin by the end of 2019 or early 2020, with the project being completed by the end of 2022.
The 11-floor expansion includes four floors for new clinical space and seven floors for the hotel. The four-floor clinical space expansion provides an additional 200,000 square feet to accommodate current patients and meet the needs of future patients. While specific plans for the development are being finalized, Mayo Clinic plans to use the additional space for expansion to the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center and Outpatient Procedure Center.
Pontiac Land and the Mayo Clinic will form a joint venture for ownership of the hotel, which will be operated by a major hotel group yet to be identified. Pontiac Land will develop the hotel space under the joint venture. Both the Mayo Clinic and Pontiac Land say that the deal is the first milestone in a planned continuing long-term collaboration between the two organizations.
Michel Harper Jr., M.D., executive dean of practice, Mayo Clinic, says, “We're experiencing significant patient care space constraints on our Rochester campus, so we're excited that this collaboration with Pontiac Land allows us to reach our expansion goals earlier to ensure that we have the infrastructure in place to provide the best possible care to our patients for generations to come.”
A published report in the Star Tribune states that the expansion will bring the Gonda Building to 32 stories, making it the tallest building in Rochester.
Earlier this month, the Mayo Clinic announced a $648-million expansion that will nearly double the size of its Phoenix campus over five years.
The Arizona Forward Project will add 1.4 million square feet of building space (to the existing 1.7 million square feet) with expanded clinical capacity, support services and infrastructure at the campus located near Loop 101 and 56th Street in North Phoenix.
Also, this month, the Mayo Clinic reported it would invest $144 million for two major capital projects that will soon be constructed on its burgeoning 400-acre Jacksonville, FL campus.
