SUNNYVALE, CA— Millennium Hotels and Resorts begins construction today on its mixed-use M Social Sunnyvale development here that when completed will feature 250 residences and a 263-room hotel.

Millennium Hotels and Resorts, the brand umbrella of Millennium & Copthorne Hotels plc, has scheduled a groundbreaking ceremony for the project today. The property when completed in 2021 will mark the first M Social property built in North America and fourth globally to join the collection following Singapore, Auckland and Suzhou.

Conceptualized as a trendsetter place by visionary founder Chairman Kwek Leng Beng, a Singaporean real estate and hospitality executive, M Social is a lifestyle concept that embraces technology allowing people to socialize and interact with each other, the company notes.

M Social Sunnyvale will also feature more than 24,000 square feet of state-of-the-art function space including 11,000 square feet of flexible meeting and event space, 4,300 square feet of outdoor space and 9,100 square feet of public spaces. Among some of the planned technology features include 5G wireless capabilities that will provide hotel guests and residents access to the fastest wireless technology available.

The development will also be the first steel frame modular hotel built in California and the first hotel in California designed with 5G wireless technology from the onset of construction.

“Today is a special day for Millennium Hotels and Resorts as the groundbreaking for M Social Sunnyvale marks the first new construction project for the brand in the US,” says Howard Wu, global chief technology officer and president of Millennium Hotels and Resorts North America. “The property's close proximity to Silicon Valley and 5G mobile technology services will further reinforce the M Social brand's commitment to technological advancements within its hotels.”

Millennium owns and/or manages a worldwide portfolio of more than 130 hotels, offering more than 37,000 rooms in business and leisure destinations in Asia, Australasia, Europe, the Middle East and North America.
