NEW YORK CITY—Foodie Alert. The James Beard Foundation is moving to a larger space. It signed a five-year and five-month lease with Adomah Corporation for 5,000 square feet at 34 W. 15th St. The non-profit dedicated to the culinary arts is relocating from 6 W. 18th St. In addition, some staff from the James Beard House will join their colleagues in the new space. The organization will occupy the entire fourth and fifth floors at the 15th St. property, a seven-story building, originally constructed in 1920. Asking rent was $48 per square foot.
“Our new location at 34 West 15th St. allows us to house our full team in one space, increasing efficiency and productivity, and the timing is especially relevant as we launch our 'Waste Not' campaign, grow our Women's Leadership Program to help female chefs break through the 'gastro-ceiling,' and roll out new procedures for the James Beard Awards to further promote diversity,” says Kristopher Moon, COO of the James Beard Foundation. The organization will maintain the historic James Beard House at 167 W. 12th St. in Greenwich Village, which offers a performance space for visiting chefs. The move, scheduled for Dec. 15, 2018, will allow the house to be used primarily for events and programs.
Founded in honor of the late James Beard, the foundation supports culinary programs, education and scholarships, food industry awards, publications and chef advocacy training.
Brett Maslin and Matthew Raphan of Adams & Company represented the foundation. Jeffrey Nissani of JSN Properties represented Adomah Corporation.
“34 West 15th St. provided a two-fold solution for the foundation: It is within walking distance to the James Beard House, allowing for increased efficiency across the entire team, and the large space, which is a diamond in the rough considering the neighboring buildings and extremely high asking rents, allows for continued growth,” says Maslin.
Other building tenants include Lion Brand Yarns on multiple floors, and A Degree of Freedom Structural on the seventh floor.
