Up Close With JLL’s Pui Ki Hung

As part of this month’s women’s focus, we get a closer look one women’s path to commercial real estate, and see how she went from wanting to be a world-traveler to supporting a team of land development capital markets.

Pui Ki Hung’s focus at JLL is to support the land development capital markets team for land deals across the U.S. and also to lead the International Residential (IResi) Platform which has branched outside of its conceived geography in the Asia-Pacific with continuous up-swing velocity over the past three years. As part of this month’s women’s focus, we get a closer look at her path to where she is now and what a day looks like through her eyes.

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be a world-traveler. Growing up as an immigrant from Hong Kong, I had the privilege of experiencing the nuance of both the Western and Eastern culture. I know that I want to experience the rest of the world and the different cultures it has to offer.

How did you get into commercial real estate?

My father involved me in real estate from a very young age. This exposure led me to gaining my broker’s license early into my career. From then, real estate has become a second nature to me. I became exposed to the different aspect of commercial real estate and fell in love with the business and its people.

Who has been the biggest influence in your life?

My Mother. She showed me how to channel hard work into success. At a young age, she taught us the balance of working hard and working smart, and the importance of balancing the two. She inspired me by transitioning from a housewife into a business owner. What amazes me the most is how she did it all with very little help, from starting her business to taking care of me and my sisters.

How has JLL supported you as a woman in business?

JLL has provided a canvas for its employees to express themselves while pursue their own ideas of success. I joined JLL as an analyst and was provided with the opportunity to participate in the conception and execution of the International Residential platform. In the short time since its conception, I have traveled to numerous JLL offices across Asia while ensuring that the platform remains one of the main revenue generators for my team. This experience and rapid growth would not have been possible without JLL and the complete trust from my team.

What advice would you give to young women who want to succeed in the workplace?

You are the most important asset that you will ever invest, grow and manage. Take the time to understand yourself and what courage means to you. It takes a lot of courage to succeed, and you have to know where to find them.

What was the best advice you’ve ever received?

“I was raised to treat the janitor with the same respect as the CEO.”

This is a popular quote that has been floating around the internet for some time now. I am not quite sure of its origin, but it has become one of the guidelines throughout my career. Every person in the chain of hierarchy plays their role, and the company would cease to function without all its pieces. Treating everyone with respect can help not only individually but holistically as well.
