Only 53 Years Left

The good earth has 53.3 years of oil left at the current rate of consumption.

Anthony LoPinto

Last week I took a one-day round-trip flight between New York and Los Angeles. At some point during my journey, I pondered how much oil the plane was consuming. Unfortunately I took the bait, and Googled only to learn that a commercial jet uses about one gallon of fuel per second. Then I Googled how many commercial flights occur each day and was amazed that 102,465 flights, on average, take off and land every day. I was afraid to do the math on how much gas is guzzled. Then I wondered, how much oil is left in the earth/? Shockingly, the good earth has 53.3 years of oil left at the current rate of consumption according to BP’s annual statistical review of world energy. Ponder the implications of that statistic from any personal or business perspective.
