NEW YORK CITY—The first outlet mall in New York City is bringing virtual reality of space exploration to the brick-and-mortar retail destination that's next to the St. George Ferry Terminal in Staten Island. Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the mission launch that landed the first human beings on the moon, Empire Outlets will feature an Apollo 11 simulation, opening in late July. Pulseworks, the company that's producing the experiential exhibition, recently installed it at the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum. The entertainment vendor has installed similar simulations at the Space Center Houston and Navy Pier in Chicago. Empire Outlets signed a five-year lease for the 1,200 square-foot exhibition that will offer motion-based 4-D (the fourth dimension being time) effects of space voyage. Participants will use the high-tech, virtual reality headgear with the Pulseworks VR Transporter motion platform. The technology allows users to look in any direction and perceive and interact with the effects in an individualized way. The Pulseworks project is called Virtual Rush: New York. In addition to the Apollo 11 journey, visitors will be able to experience other virtual reality flights of space and time, or choose underwater exploration, air flight and other interstellar journeys. Each VR journey will cost $13 per customer and last between eight to 10 minutes. The $450 million Empire Outlets mall opened in May 2019. The 340,000-square-foot shopping center, designed by SHoP Architects and developed by BFC Partners, has 100 outlet retailers plus dining. The project started under former Mayor Michael Bloomberg's administration as an effort to develop the St. George neighborhood near the waterfront in Staten Island. New York state has subsidized the mall's creation with $47 million. Pulseworks, LLC provided all images in the above slideshow.
