AUSTIN, TX—Mexican cinema operator Cinépolis has acquired Moviehouse & Eatery, a dine-in movie theater circuit in Texas with five operating locations and one under construction, part of a larger push to expand into global markets. As of the completion of the transaction, Cinépolis operates 258 screens at 26 locations in seven US states and is the second largest cinema operator in the world in terms of moviegoers.

Cinépolis currently operates 5,941 screens across 738 cinemas, with a presence in 17 countries, entertaining more than 338 million patrons annually. It is expanding in the Americas, notes CEO Alejandro Ramírez Magaña, who says in prepared remarks that “We are fully committed to bring our global expertise to the US market.”

Since the opening of its first theater in 2012, Moviehouse & Eatery has quickly become one of the leading upscale dine-in theater operators in Texas with five theaters and 47 screens in the Austin and Dallas metropolitan areas, appealing to an affluent family-oriented demographic. Each location offers scratch-made food and plush recliner seating, as well as full bar and dine-in service using call button technology.

Besides the US, Cinépolis has recently entered the Indonesian market as well.
