The Wall Street Journal ran an interesting article yesterday about what's important to younger generations versus what was important 20 years ago. When the WSJ/NBC surveyed Americans 20 years ago, hard work, patriotism, religion and having children were most important. Today, the importance of those attributes have fallen substantially. Overall, patriotism is down 9%, however of those 55 or older, 80% said patriotism was very important compared with 42% for those ages 18 to 38. Two-thirds of the older group cited religion as very important, compared with fewer than one-third of the younger group. The only attribute that remains consistent is hard work. I guess that reflects that all generations recognize that you need to earn a buck.
