NEW YORK CITY—The Real Estate Board of New York announced the honorees of its 124th annual banquet next January. Award recipients have exemplified a commitment to the real estate community and New York City, not only reshaping the skyline but upping efforts for increased diversity, said William C. Rudin, REBNY chairman at a press conference.

Held in high regard was the legacy of Héctor Figueroa, president of the local 32BJ of the Service Employees International Union, posthumously awarded the Kenneth R. Gerrety Humanitarian Award. Figueroa was notified about the accolade before his death this year.

Under Figueroa's leadership of 175,000 members, he occupied the frontlines of the nation's most pressing matters, championing immigrant and economic rights, Rudin said. "He knew how important the issues were," he added.

David R. Greenbaum, vice chairman of Vornado Realty Trust, and recipient of the Harry B. Helmsley Distinguished New Yorker Award echoed Rudin's sentiments. "Figueroa was a fierce advocate for his members, but especially a fierce advocate for New York City," he said.

Several of the recipients expressed their passion for advocacy and increased diversity among real estate professionals, nodding to Figueroa's legacy.

Jodi Pulice, founder & CEO of JRT Realty Group, recipient of the Bernard H. Mendik Lifetime Leadership in Real Estate Award, highlighted her and Rudin's efforts to jump-start several new initiatives to build upon the development of a real estate pipeline for diverse talent. "Early in my career I knew I could be a vehicle, and my company JRT could be a vehicle for change," she told GlobeSt. "All we want is a seat at the table."

REBNY's goal is to connect more women and people of color, beginning at the college level, Rudin said. "It's important for the industry to reflect the diversity of our city," he said.

Other banquet honorees include Jay Kriegel, a senior advisor for the Related Companies, awarded the John E. Zuccotti Public Service Award; Henry M. Celestino, vice chairman of L&L Holding Company, awarded the George M. Brooker Management Executive of the Year Award; Kevin R. Wang, owner of KRW Realty, awarded the Louis Smadbeck Memorial Broker Recognition Award; Robin Fisher, senior managing director at Newmark Knight Frank and founder of BLACE, awarded the Young Real Estate Professional of the Year Award.
