BALTIMORE, MD—"It was a great evening to celebrate the accomplishments of like-minded professionals who are focused on revitalizing communities through opportunity zones." So said Wes Larson, principal and CEO of Sound West Group, when talking about the recent GlobeSt.com ADAPT: Opportunity Zones awards September 16th in Baltimore, MD.

The event put we put a spotlight on the achievements of those who have had a hand in locating adaptive reuse solutions across the country and at the same time, also focused on Opportunity Zones and the potential they offer – for both adaptive reuse and new construction.

"Since opportunity zones are such a new concept, it was great to see the pioneers who are embracing and bringing this program to life with unique projects at the ADAPT Awards," Larson told GlobeSt.com.

Sound West Group was honored at the event for having an outstanding economic and social impact project. The firm's Marina Square project in Bremerton, WA broke ground in April 2019 and the 2.2-acre space in the Seattle suburb was a surface parking lot. Situated on the Puget Sound waterfront, the project site overlooks Bremerton Marina. Sound West Group is transforming this space into a mixed-use waterfront development that includes hospitality, multifamily and paid parking. Upon completion, the Marina Square project will include a 125-room Cambria Hotel.

"I believe adaptive reuse is the future of development. It is so gratifying to take an existing building or urban infill and transform it into something much more useful that adds value to the community," he said. "I think the next wave of growth will be from the suburbs back into the city."
