Amazon Breaks Ground on 1M SF Fulfillment Center in Pittsburgh Suburb

State officials note that Amazon plans to invest more than $30 million in the new facility and the project will create approximately 800 new, full-time jobs at the property in Findlay Township.

Amazon also announced its newest renewable energy solar projects in the US will be located in Warren County, NC and Prince George County, VA. Together, they total will total 215 MW and are expected to generate 500,997 MWh of energy annually.

IMPERIAL, PA—A host of state and local dignitaries were on hand yesterday for the groundbreaking of the more than 1 million-square-foot Amazon’s Fulfillment Center being built here.

State officials note that Amazon plans to invest more than $30 million in the new facility and the project will create approximately 800 new, full-time jobs at the property in Findlay Township.

Among the dignitaries on hand at the event included Department of Community and Economic Development secretary Dennis Davin, regional director of operations for Amazon Robert Long, the CEO of Allegheny Conference on Community Development Stefani Pashman, as well as other state and local officials.

“The new Imperial Amazon location will provide Pennsylvanians with job opportunities beyond just within the fulfillment center,” said Sec. Davin. “The construction process itself will provide thousands of additional jobs for Allegheny County families and we are eager to continue our partnership with Amazon in Pennsylvania, as they continue to support smaller businesses and developers through their products and services.”

The Imperial location is Amazon’s 11th fulfillment operations facility in Pennsylvania. Amazon also has a sortation center and tech hub located in Pittsburgh, in addition to Whole Foods Market locations and college pick-up locations.

Gov. Tom Wolf announced in July that Amazon had received a funding proposal from the Department of Community and Economic Development for $1.6 million in Job Creation Tax Credits to be distributed after the creation of new jobs.

Our ability to open new fulfillment centers that create great jobs with industry leading pay and benefits that start on day, in safe, innovative workplaces, is not something that can be done without the strong support of the commonwealth and the local Allegheny County, Findlay Township and Pittsburgh regional community,” Amazon’s Long said. “Amazon currently operates a Tech Hub and sortation center in Pittsburgh, and we are excited to create more than 800 new full-time jobs with the launch of this fulfillment center, to join the more than 10,000 current employees across the state.”

The e-commerce giant also announced on Wednesday three new renewable energy projects in the US and UK that support Amazon’s commitment to The Climate Pledge and reaching 80% renewable energy by 2024 and 100% renewable energy target by 2030 on its path to net zero carbon by 2040.

Amazon’s newest renewable energy project in Europe will be the largest corporate wind power purchase agreement in the United Kingdom, located on the Kintyre Peninsula, Scotland. Once complete, the new Amazon Wind Farm will provide 50 MW of new renewable capacity with expected generation of 168,000 MWh of clean energy annually, enough to power 46,000 UK homes.

Amazon’s newest renewable energy solar projects in the US will be located in Warren County, NC, and Prince George County, VA. Together, they total 215 MW and are expected to generate 500,997 MWh of energy annually. This will be Amazon’s second renewable energy project in the state of North Carolina and eighth renewable energy project in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Once complete, the three new Amazon renewable energy wind and solar projects will provide 265 MW of additional renewable capacity and are expected to begin producing energy in 2021, supplying energy to the company’s Amazon Web Services data centers, which power Amazon and millions of AWS customers globally.
