DEERFIELD, IL—Horizon Therapeutics plc of Dublin, Ireland reports it has agreed to acquire the three-building former Takeda Pharmaceuticals complex here.

The deal for the more than 650,000-square-foot complex on 70 acres is expected to close in the second half of this year. No financial terms of the transaction were disclosed.

Horizon, which was founded as a start-up in 2008, is being represented by CBRE in the transaction, Savills has been marketing the property for sale for Takeda Pharmaceuticals, according to multiple published reports.

Takeda announced in 2018 it would shut down its Deerfield operations and relocate approximately 1,000 employees to Massachusetts. The move to Boston was prompted by Takeda's $62-billion purchase of Shire, which maintains its US headquarters in Boston.

"Lake County has a rich life sciences ecosystem and we are looking forward to continuing to contribute to and lead the growth of that ecosystem," says Timothy Walbert, chairman, president and chief executive officer. "We have experienced significant growth during the last three years including adding more than 200 employees in 2019. This new campus gives us the flexibility to accommodate our current employees as well as our anticipated long-term growth."

According to the company's website, Horizon currently has operations in Lake Forest, IL at 150 South Saunders Road and at 10 South Wacker Drive in Chicago. The company also has US operations in San Francisco and Novato, CA and in Washington, DC.
