Asian-Inspired Food Retailer Wagamama Plots Northeast Expansion
Wagamama has opened up another location in Midtown at 100 W 55th St. as part of its plan to open more locations across the Northeast in markets such as Washington, D.C.
NEW YORK CITY- Wagamama, an Asian-inspired food retailer, has opened up another New York City location in Midtown at 100 W 55th St. as part of its expansion plan to bring more locations to the Northeast.
With locations in Murray Hill and Nomad, the retailer saw W55th street as the next best location, Robert Cornog, co-ceo and board member of Wagamama USA, tells GlobeSt.com. “In New York City and Midtown, it’s hard to say you can’t find anything you want,” he said.
Launched in 1992, Wagamama has over 200 hundred locations worldwide, mostly in London, where it was founded. Wagamama is looking to open locations in Washington, D.C. and at some point in Durham, North Carolina.
The new location on W55th is its third in New York and will hold up to 185 seats for guests. Typical footprints for stores span 4,000 to 5,000 square feet. The ground floor food retailer has an open kitchen layout, which has become popular in recent years.
With nearby attractions to Wagamama on W55th and Sixth Avenue, the restaurant is expected to capitalize on foot traffic spilling over from Central Park and other Midtown attractions, Cornog said. “ We look forward to taking this venue to a popular center, which is one of New York City’s most popular real estate,” he said.
Wagamama’s dining menu features Asian-inspired food influences from Japan, China and Korea. In the first week of opening, sales have exceeded expectations, according to Cornog.
