In an open letter, Elon Musk—who was a co-founder of OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT—and a bevy of tech visionaries have called for an immediate six-month pause on the training of more powerful artificial intelligence bots now in development.

The letter, signed by Musk, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and hundreds of others, was posted on the Future of Life Institute website. It warns of imminent "profound risk to society and humanity" without the establishment of global guardrails for the development of AI platforms that soon will be able to outsmart us.

"Contemporary AI systems are now becoming human-competitive at general tasks. Should we develop nonhuman minds that might eventually outnumber, outsmart, obsolete and replace us?" the letter asked.
