How to Navigate a Career Transition

Four women share their experiences of making daring career leaps.

OLYMPIC VALLEY, CA—Breaking barriers for women in the CRE marketplace can feel like an overwhelming challenge, even for the most accomplished professionals. At the recent GlobeSt. Women of Influence conference, panelists delved into the complexities of this journey, discussing moments of uncertainty and the potential for positive change within the industry.

During the session, four inspiring women shared their experiences of making daring career leaps and offered valuable advice to the audience. They emphasized the importance of recognizing the right time to transition, how to choose the next path, and the courage to embark on new ventures. Overall, understanding your skillset and knowing what your boundaries is key, panelists explain.

Carrie Bobb, president of hellojenny, spoke passionately about the challenges many face while trying to find their direction. “Whether through personal choice or circumstances beyond one’s control, transition can be difficult,” she said. “She urged the audience not to wait until the pain becomes unbearable to be brave… Instead, she encouraged them to take action and create something meaningful out of adversity, drawing from their skills and determination.”

Panelist Tonya Brandon, Senior Managing Director, GOS Leadership of Cushman & Wakefield, stressed the significance of being true to oneself. She shared her personal journey of reaching a breaking point, when her well-being was compromised by the demands of her career. Recognizing the physical and emotional toll, she knew it was time for a change. By listening to her inner self and creating a strategic plan, she successfully navigated her way to a better path.

Sarah Malcolm, Founder, EVP and Managing Director of Quiet Valor, recounted a challenging time when she faced adversity at work while being eight months pregnant. Despite excelling in her role, she found herself undervalued by new leadership. With support from a trusted mentor, her mother, who was also in the industry, she mustered the courage to move on. Finding strength in herself, she flourished in a new position, eventually realizing her capabilities and worth.

Moderator Beth Azor, President of Azor Advisory Services, also highlighted the importance of recognizing the needs of the market and the industry. “By reaching out to others, networking, and seeking advice, opportunities can arise that align with personal goals and aspirations,” she said.
