NanoTech Claims Oversubscribed Funding Round

The company's thermal coating for roofs can decrease carbon emissions through lower energy use.

NanoTech Inc., a material science startup working on “breakthrough materials in fireproofing and cool roof coating,” said that it had closed an oversubscribed funding round. The company did not publish how much it had received, but said that three institutional, two corporate-strategic, and seven family office investors were participating along with the company’s initial investor, Ecliptic Capital.

NanoTech says that working with “the continued support of Halliburton Labs industrial scaling resources,” it looked to “use the funds to bolster NanoTech’s nationwide network of trusted installers and distributors for immediate delivery across all 50 states.”

The company has a material that enables “high performing, eco-friendly, long-lasting, and easy to use fireproofing solutions.” Halliburton Labs has some posted videos showing a plastic water bottle coated with the company’s Nano Shield product and an egg with a 2-millimeter coating both withstanding exposure to a 3,000° F flame.

NanoTech claims that the rooftop version of its product can extend the life of an industrial roof by 10 years and cut energy consumption by as much as 45%.

“The Nano Shield Cool Roof Coat is an acrylic polymer designed to extend the life of existing roofs by up to ten years,” says the company’s website. “Our competitors primarily rely on reflectivity to calculate energy savings. Our breakthrough technology is different. The Nano Shield Cool Roof Coat works by emitting 94% of the heat away from the roof while simultaneously leveraging the lowest thermal conductivity on the market to stop heat transfer through the roof. Developed through fireproofing technology, our technology can cut HVAC use by up to 45%.”

The material is supposed to be rain-safe within eight hours of application, with no reportable volatile organic compounds, spray or roll-on application, application temperature range of 41°F to 200°F, and the ability to add color pigmentation to match branded colors.

“The Nano Shield Cool Roof Coat builds upon the superficial solar ray reflection of traditional white coatings and paint with the company’s industry breakthrough innovation that virtually eliminates heat penetration via the roof,” according to the company. “In some applications, customers have seen a staggering drop up to 40°F – inside the building.”

Additionally, NanoTech says that its product, used as an insulative coating, can with about a fifth of an inch coating provide as much insulating properties as four inches of insulating spray foam. The Nano Shield material can also be added to existing building materials such as paints, resins, gypsum, cement, polymers, plastics, and fiberglass with minimal loading and can also work as a fireproofing coating.
