Whole Foods has joined the growing number of retailers introducing abbreviated versions of their original concepts in order to target new markets. The grocery-store chain has unveiled a quick-shop store format for urban neighborhoods that it is calling Whole Foods Market Daily Shop.

The first store will open on the Upper East Side in Manhattan at 1175 Third Ave. this year with additional locations in New York City to follow. Following the New York City launch, Whole Foods plans to bring the format to other cities.

The new stores will range between 7,000 to 14,000 square feet, which is about a quarter to half the footprint of an average 40,000 square foot Whole Foods store. The company says that the offerings will be similar to the standard fare at its regular-sized grocery stores aimed at urban customers hurrying in in the early morning or after work for grab-and-go meals, according to Christina Minardi, EVP of Growth & Development at Whole Foods Market & Amazon.
